What to expect
A mariachi is a group of musicians in matching charro suits who play and sing live, with no speakers. Families book them for a quince Mass, the grand entrance, a serenata at the door or a set during dinner. Most groups know the classics, take requests and will play Las Mañanitas for the guest of honor.
- Who comes
- Usually 5 to 10 musicians: violins, trumpets, a guitar, a vihuela and the big guitarrón on the bass line. Six to eight players fill a room of about 150 guests.
- Space
- An open spot near the guest of honor where the whole group can stand together. No stage needed.
- Power and water
- None. Mariachi is acoustic. In a big hall, ask whether the singer wants a microphone from your DJ.
- How long
- Most families book 1 to 2 hours, and most groups have a one-hour minimum. Plan the set around the moment you care about most.
- How many
- One group covers the whole party.
- Grandparents to toddlers enjoy it

How to book it
What we'll ask you
Your request asks a few quick things, so vendors can price it right:
- Which mariachi styles interest you?Mariachi for the Mass, Serenata, Dinner and dance set, Callejoneada
- How many hours do you need them?
- How many musicians?4-5, 6-8, 9+, Not sure
- Where will they play?Church, Entrance, Dinner, Serenata, Parade
Say which moments you want them for (the Mass, the entrance, dinner, a serenata) and roughly what time, so they can plan the set.
Houston notes
- Mother's Day (May 10) and December 12, the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, are the busiest days of the year for mariachis. Book those months ahead.
- For a quince or wedding Mass, ask the parish about its music rules before you book; some want to approve the songs.
- Outdoors in summer, put the group in the shade. They play in full suits.
